Clinical trials suggest smokers who completely substitute conventional cigarettes for a blu vape experience dramatic reductions in their exposure to the harmful chemicals that can contribute to smoking-related diseases.
The findings, reported in the Journal of Toxicology Mechanisms and Methods, measured the changes in fifteen biomarkers of exposure to harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) – including carbon monoxide, aldehydes, and tobacco-specific nitrosamines – in the urine, blood and exhaled breath of 105 adult smokers during a five-day controlled trial.
The falls in exposure are significant, and actually similar to complete smoking cessation.
The candidates were confined to ensure the most accurate testing, and randomly assigned to change from their usual brand of cigarette to either a) vaping blu only; b) a combination of blu and the subject’s usual cigarette brand; c) no use of any vape, tobacco, or nicotine products.
In the blood of both vape users and smokers who quit, levels of carbon monoxide were reduced by over 75%, organic compounds such as acrolein, benzene and 1-3-butadiene were reduced by over 80%. Similarly, levels of tobacco-specific nitrosamines were reduced by 66-98% in the complete cessation group, and by 62-93% in the vape group.
Encouragingly, in eight out of the nine urinary biomarkers we studied, the reductions in levels of HPHCs following exclusive vaping were almost indistinguishable from reductions in smokers who stopped altogether.
Interestingly, when it came to the dual use group who halved their self-reported daily cigarette consumption of tobacco cigarettes by using vapes, we also saw reductions in exposure to HPHCs that were broadly proportional to the reduction in number of cigarettes smoked.
The findings support our other research which suggests blu vapour is up to 95% less toxic than cigarette smoke, contains up to 99% less HPHCs, and does not negatively impact indoor air quality – unlike conventional cigarette smoke.
