//Take five for Imperial Brands at the Global Forum on Nicotine 2021

The GFN conference takes place 17-18 June, and we contribute with a short video about the science and innovation behind Pulze, our heated tobacco device. 

The theme for the 8^th Global Forum on Nicotine (GFN) is ‘the Future for Nicotine’ – from science to issues around policy and regulation – and comprises presentations, information, discussions and debate held both online (#GFN21) and at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Liverpool, UK.

Due to the now-usual bias to online submissions and interactions due to Covid-19, the hosts asked delegates to submit ‘GFN Fives’: short multi-media presentations, up to a maximum of five minutes each. Topics range from science and innovation, to consumer advocacy, to policy and regulatory issues.

The future of nicotine will likely include the increasing development and use of heated tobacco (HT) devices by adult smokers looking to transition away from combustible cigarettes. Imperial has created a new video about the scientific validation of its HT device, Pulze, which can be seen below and on the conference website here.

“We welcome the work of the Global Forum on Nicotine in pushing the dial further on the topic of nicotine and its future, including through wider acceptance of potentially less harmful nicotine-containing products as an effective tobacco harm reduction tool for adult smokers,” says Dr Liz Mason, Heated Tobacco Science Manager at Imperial who narrates the GFN Five video above.

“We believe next generation products such as heated tobacco products have an important role to play in making a meaningful contribution to harm reduction, and acknowledge the critical importance of ensuring the highest product standards are maintained across the industry in order to increase adult smoker trust.”

Organisers say GFN participants will be encouraged to visit the ‘Fives’ page on the website during the breaks between sessions, and it currently holds more than 70 videos produced by manufacturers, academics and organisations interested in or working towards tobacco harm reduction (THR). In addition, one GFN panel session will discuss the themes and content raised across the productions.

“There is no good reason why a switch from tobacco products to less harmful nicotine delivery systems should not be encouraged,” Prof Michael Russsell, father of THR.

The “father of THR”, psychiatrist and research scientist Professor Michael Russell who died in 2009, has his research and work honoured at the event with the annual Michael Russell Oration (MRO), recognising his pioneering study of smoking behaviour, development of clinical interventions and public health policy action.
